Five Ways to be Motivated on Blue Monday

According to a thoroughly un-scientific equation, today is the most depressing day of the year. The third Monday of every year is given the title Blue Monday due to the lack of daylight, time elapsed since Christmas and the fact that a lot of New Year’s resolutions having already collapsed.

Whilst the concept of Blue Monday is questionable, it is understandable that some do find it difficult to be motivated around this time of year.

Today we look at five ways to keep yourself on track at work, whether it be on Blue Monday or not.

  1. Make a to-do list
Whist this is one of the more obvious work motivators, making a to-do list is surprisingly overlooked when an attack of the work blues comes on. If you find yourself unmotivated or struggling with your workload a to-do list is a great  way to clear your head and focus on what needs to be done.

  2. Take breaks
It might seem borderline impossible to find time to take breaks, however it is essential to keeping yourself motivated throughout the day. Take a walk away from your desk and find some way to remove yourself from whatever it is you’re working on. Regardless of what you do, when you get back to your desk you are more likely to feel energized and refreshed.

  3. Go outside
With the long dark days of January fully in swing, If you do find yourself with a few moments spare, stepping out into the daylight will do you the world of good.

  4. Don’t focus on things outside your control
In all aspects of life, it’s never a good use of energy to spend time focusing on things that we simply cannot control. Work is no exception to that. To stay as motivated as possible, omit uncontrollables from your mindset as focusing on them can impede your progress at work.

  5. Spend time with your colleagues
The idea of spending more time with people you see every day may be unappealing to some. However, hanging out with your colleagues both in and out of the office can be a work motivator. Not only can it enable you to forge strong bonds but it might help you find additional inspiration, help troubleshoot any issues you have been having and set new personal and team goals.
