Post-Olympic Real Estate Developments in Tokyo

Construction in Tokyo does not look like it will slow down after the 2020 Olympics, with several major projects already in the pipeline. Today we look at five of these projects.

Tokyo Station (2021 – 2027)

Located 300 meters north of Tokyo Station, the Tokiwabashi District Redevelopment will include two high-rise towers – a 37-story, 230m tall office tower and a 61-story, 390m tall office tower due for completion in 2021 and 2027 respectively, The latter will be Japan’s tallest building when complete.

Shibuya Station Redevelopment (2022)
A major redevelopment project centered around Shibuya Station, including office and residential towers.

Toranomon-Azabudai Dustrict (2022)
With discussions for the project starting back in 1998, the Toranomon-Azabudai Distrct Redevelopment will contain Japan’s largest building by 2022. The redevelopment will include a 330m tall, 65-storey office and residential building, a 270m tall, 63-storey office and residential building and a 240m tall, 53-storey residential building.. It will include a 1,000 sqm (10,760 sq ft) penthouse apartment on the top floor.

Japan’s Tallest Apartment Building (2026)
A 5-hector site located across the street from Shinjuku’s Park Hyatt and south of Central Park. The project will include two 65-story, 235m tall apartment buildings containing 3,200 apartments. When completed, the towers will be the largest apartment buildings in Japan based on total floor count and the largest development based on total apartment count.

Maglev Train to Nagoya and Osaka (2027 – 2045)
The Chuo Shinkansen Maglev line is currently under construction. The line will connect Tokyo to Nagoya by 2027 and Osaka by 2045. When complete, the trip from Tokyo will take 40 minutes (reduced from current time of 101 minutes) and Tokyo to Osaka will take 67 minutes (reduced from current time of 153 minutes).
