Expand into the world's fifth largest economy using our PEO services in France
With the fifth largest economy in the world and third largest in the EU - after Germany and the UK - it is no wonder that France is a popular location for expanding businesses into Europe.
Its stable economy combined with thriving tourism, automotive, manufacturing and energy industries make it a lucrative country for businesses. Meanwhile its position as a global trading partner offers ample opportunity for both local and foreign businesses.
While expanding your business into France may bring new business possibilities, it also brings red tape and legislation with it. First and foremost, the requirement to set up a legal entity for your business in France is a costly, time-consuming and arduous process that can delay your business expansion.
Secondly, The French Labour Code, which sets out French employment laws, offers strong worker protections and can be difficult to navigate if you are unfamiliar with French business protocols. Some French employment laws are as follows:
- Employers must provide a written or verbal employment contract. Only the French version of this document is legally binding, however, employees can request a copy in their native language.
- As of 2017, employees in France have a 'right to disconnect' which legally entitles them not to reply to work communications outside of working hours
- Working hours are set at 35 hours a week or 7 hours a day. Under special circumstances working hours can increase to 48 hours per week
- Maternity leave is set at 16 weeks while paternity leave is set at 11 consecutive days
On top of employment laws outlined in The French Labour Code employees working in France may also be required to obtain a work visa. While workers in EU countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are free to work in France without a visa, non-EU workers will need to obtain a work visa. There are two main types of work visas in France:
- Short stay visa – for stays of up to 90 days.
- Long-stay visa– for individuals who plan to stay for more than 90 days.
A combination of employment laws, visa requirements and the process of setting up a legal entity makes expanding into France a challenging and time-consuming process for businesses. This is where our expert PEO services come in.
