Boasting one of the most favourable tax regimes in the whole of Europe, Malta offers a standard corporate tax rate of 35% and a wide range of double taxation agreements with other countries. A country with a strong political and economic stability, Malta promises entry into EU markets, as well as some of the most lucrative sectors for business including; Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Agriculture.

Not only is the tax regime efficient and the markets profitable, but the cost of living is also relatively low. This means salaries, rent, and other expenses are low, reducing the cost of business operations in Malta.

However, while there are many benefits to doing business in Malta, expansion into the country can also come with complex regulations – including but not limited to:

  • Business and trade dealings must be in line with EU laws and national legislation.
  • Maltese employment contracts can be fixed term or indefinite. Fixed term contracts can generally be for a maximum of 4 years including all renewals. A new fixed term contract should be provided within 12 days of expiration of the old contract, or the employee will be deemed to be on an indefinite contract.
  • All employees are entitled to 24 days per year in addition to public holidays. Leave is calculated in hours (192 hours based on an 8 hour day). Holidays are prorated in the first year of employment. When public holidays fall at the weekend, employees can take a day in lieu.
